Our 7th Annual Polar Plunge takes place on Saturday, January 25 at Mauch Chunk Lake in Jim Thorpe. Registration from 10am to 11:30am. First plungers hit the water at 12 noon. $35 registration fee includes event t-shirt. (Cash or checks accepted for registration fee.) Come out and join the party! There will be a DJ and food/beverages available for purchase.

Marian Scholar Club

It is our tradition at Marian, that on the feast of the Immaculate Conception we recognize our Marian Scholars; those students who scored 600 or higher in either or both parts of the SAT and also anyone who has a comparable ACT score. It was the Administration’s privilege today to recognize and congratulate those students, and those that were already a part of this distinguished group.

Coach Dakosty Returns

Marian Catholic High School Principal Jean Susko proudly announces the Marian Catholic High School’s 2020 Football Season Head Coach as Stan Dakosty. We are looking forward to rebuilding the Marian football program and Stan is the right choice to do so. With 43 years of football coaching experience and 40 of the years as Marian Catholic High School’s head football coach, he is well known as the winningest football coach in District 11 history, posting a career record of 309-148-3. Stan’s teams have won eight District 11 titles, six conference championships and the 1990 PIAA state crown. He has sent over 270 players onto play college football and many have gone into coaching football. Stan plans to not only strengthen our Marian program but also work on rebuilding a little Colts program.

According to Stan Dakosty, “After thoughtful consideration and the support of my family, I am proud and excited to return as the head football coach of Marian Catholic High School. As the head coach, my intent will be to run a first class program that will bring out the best of the Marian student athletes on and off the field. I will be reaching out to the Marian Family, who have been so supportive to our program in the past, asking them to continue the support and to build upon it. “

Marian Football Season

A tough emotional decision has been made by Marian Catholic High School to forfeit the remaining football games of this season involving Mahanoy Area on October 18th and Tamaqua Area on October 25th.  This difficult decision was based solely on the safety of the team’s remaining fourteen healthy football players.   Marian Catholic appreciates the hard work and dedication of our student athletes and their coaches throughout this season and we look to move forward and plan for the 2020 season.

I hope that your family has shared an enjoyable summer together and that all students are recharged and ready to start a new school year.

The Marian family has been busy in the offices and throughout the building preparing for the opening of school. There are many building projects underway. The main floor bathrooms have been remodeled. Due to an increased number of requests for STEM elective classes, our Maker Space has been moved to a much larger area in Room 209. The Virtual Classroom has been expanded with additional computers. The new Library and Research Center is located in room 200. The former library is in the process of being converted into the new Anna Morgan Business Center.

This year two new teachers are joining Marian’s English department. Dr. Rodeen Lechleitner will be teaching primarily senior English classes and Mr. Jason Brimmer will be our yearbook advisor and teaching primarily junior English classes. Mr. Zachary Mrochko is returning as a full-time social studies and STEM teacher. We are still in search of a full-time mathematics teacher for Algebra and Geometry courses. Mrs. Dzuranin is our new main office administrative assistant and Mrs. Milosh joins are staff as an administrative assistant who will assist in various areas throughout the building.

Families are invited to get involved at Marian. The Men of Marian is our school-wide booster organization comprised of parents, alumni and volunteers that support our school and students in many different ways. To name a few, they provide student insurance coverage and transportation for athletic events, pay the cost of our athletic trainer, and cover a majority of costs associated with our athletic programs. Meetings are held on the second Monday of the month at 6 PM in room 101. New members are always welcome!

Back to School Night is scheduled for September 5 at 6:30 PM. Parents will initially met in the gym for a brief comments and introduction of staff followed by an opportunity to experience your child’s schedule and meet their teachers.

As we start our new year together, I would like to share the following prayer:

Please review this information with your student(s). Our teachers and administration are available for any questions or concerns you might have regarding your student and Marian. We look forward to a productive school year, and wish everyone much success!

The Student Handbook can be found on the school website, under the student section. This covers most aspects of a student’s life at Marian. Students and families are expected to review the handbook, and adhere to rules and regulations of the school at all times.

Please note the following updates to the student handbook:

*Backpacks, book bags, gym bags, purses, etc. must be kept in a student’s locker during the school day. In season student athletes may use the locker room lockers to keep their gym bags in during the school day.

*Students are not permitted to carry and/or use cell phones and/or wear smartwatches anywhere during the school day. If brought to school, these items must be turned off and left in the student’s locker. If a student’s cell phone and/or smart watch are visible, it will be considered a violation of the electronic device policy.

*Seniors and Juniors are allowed two (2) college visitation days during the school year. Upon returning to Marian, the student is required to present the signed verification of visitation form to the Dean of Students’ Office in order to be an excused absence.

*Electronic Smoking Devices (ESD)are completely prohibited. According to WHO, FDA and the Surgeon General: “Electronic Smoking Device (ESD) means any product containing or delivering nicotine and/or any other substance intended for human consumption that can be used by a person in any manner for the purpose of inhaling vapor or aerosol from the product. These devices and products are categorized under drugs/drug paraphernalia. The term includes any such device, whether manufactured, distributed, marketed, or sold as an e-cigarette, e-cigar, e-pipe, e-hookah, or vape pen, Juul or under any other product name or descriptor.” The possession, use, buying, selling, distributing of any ESD device, component, part, accessories, juice, etc, while the student is on school grounds, a school bus and/or at a school sponsored activity is a summary offense which includes a fine, demerits, suspension and the student will be required to participate in a nicotine cessation and reduction program with Project Connect through the Caron Student Assistance Program.

*Each student will be issued a student planner on the first day of school. All students are required to have their planner with them during the school day. The planner includes the bell schedules, important school calendar dates, school mission statement, alma mater, weekly prayers and scripture readings, classroom location map, pages to write assignments and important reminders, and hall passes.

*Attendance – if a student is to be absent from school, a parent or guardian must call the school to report the absence by 8:14AM. Upon return to school after an absence, a student must present a note signed by a parent or guardian to the main office before returning to class. For absences of longer than 3 days, Pennsylvania Law demands a doctor’s note be obtained. We also need to know ahead of time if a student will be late to school, or leaving early. Please remind your student to sign in at the office if he or she is late. If a student is leaving early, a parent/guardian must sign the student out, unless the student is driving, in which case, a note signed by a parent or guardian must be presented to the main office. Please also make sure to turn in any special medical emergency doctor notes to the main office.

*Government lunch applications can be picked up and submitted year round at the main office. If you checked yes on the family survey for low income, you may qualify for free or reduced-price lunches. Please resubmit a new government lunch application if your financial situation changes over the course of the year.

*Sweater order forms are in the main office. Orders are due before the end of September (money is not due until delivery). Polo shirts and gym uniforms are available year round at the school store.

*Medications – over-the-counter and prescription medications must be checked in at the main office; the only exceptions are prescription inhalers and epi-pens. If a student’s medical situation changes over the course of the year, please inform the office, and update the emergency data card accordingly. If your child is highly allergic to specific environmental conditions, such as bee stings, and requires an epi-pen on hand, please ensure that the office is aware of it.

*Student drop-off and pick-up: To help prevent accidents, and to maintain a safe environment during times of vehicle congestion, parents are asked to drop students off in the front of school in the morning. In the afternoon, we ask that students be picked up in the front of the school. Buses will pick students up in the back of the school. Please drive safely, and obey traffic patterns.

*Transportation – if you have any transportation questions or concerns, please contact the Dean of Students.

Welcome back!

There have been many changes to the curriculum this school year.  We will be operating our school day on a Waterfall Schedule. This adds a period to the schedule; a class is dropped each day while rotating on an eight-day cycle while attending 7 classes each day. Students and faculty are looking forward to the new schedule as students who have to miss classes due to sports will not miss the same classes each day. The new system also gives us the opportunity to offer Music Class as a regularly scheduled course.

We are expanding our Dual Enrollment classes with LCCC to include not only Probability and Statistics and College Algebra but also Calculus, and we are working on Senior English.  This will allow students who qualify to leave Marian with 6 to 12 college credits. Requested Electives available to our Seniors have expanded, and some Juniors will also be able to take advantage of those. Requested electives give students the opportunity to take courses online in a field they are interested in entering after graduation.

The Theology classes, with Fr. Miller, will be in chapel each First Friday this school year. Students will be learning about each of the church’s Liturgical Seasons, and experiencing Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament.

Last school year, we updated our Science Labs, and added a new STEM lab. In one year, we have outgrown that room. This year, we added a new STEM classroom, and 3 classes, and all classes are at their maximum. Sixty students are now involved in the program. Five of our teachers have gone through STEM training, with the Intermediate Unit being trained in the Carnegie STEM Excellence Pathway. We are looking forward to this school year and all the new things happening!

Enrollment Update: We are proud to announce that the enrollment for the next school year has increased. Class of 2023, our incoming freshman class is 10% larger than last year’s, and our retention rate is 96% of our student body. In October, we will kick off our Shadowing Program and also begin the registration process for the 2020-2021 school year. If you know of anyone interested in participating in the shadowing program, or interested in applying to Marian, please ask them to get in touch with the main office to get more information.

Greetings from the School Counselor!

It’s hard to believe that summer is over and we are beginning a new school year! Even though I do meet with all grade levels during the first month of school, much of my attention is given to the college/career planning process for the Class of 2020.

After the completion of the first week of school, I will be having individual meetings with each student in the senior class. These meetings are critical in assessing their individual progress towards their post- secondary goals. Please remind your student to prepare for our meeting by focusing their attention to the following tasks:

College Visits– At this time, students should focus on determining which schools they will be applying to and establish what application deadline is best. Please remember that Early Action is recommended but Early Decision is not. Students and parents considering Early Decision should meet privately with me to discuss this choice in greater detail.

Completion of the Common App Common App is the college admissions application in which many schools have adopted. This application portal streamlines this process for the students. At this time, your student should be actively working to complete the application if this is the preferred submission method for his or her schools of interest.

ACT and/or SAT Scheduling– If your student has not yet scheduled a college entrance exam or desires to increase his or her current score, now is the time to schedule any late or additional testing.

Completion of FAFSA– The FASFA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) officially opens for completion on October 1st. I recommend that this application is completed by you and your student no later than Thanksgiving. Many universities create their own deadlines, and we want to ensure that our students do not miss any potential aid due to late FASFA submissions.

Financial Aid for the 2019-2020 school year is officially closed; however, the new application will be available in September. Welcome to all new and re-enrolling families!

We are excited about all of the positive changes happening at Marian. Last year we initiated a new program called the Parent Ambassador Program. Marian Catholic High School recognizes the value of a strong Catholic education. A Parent Ambassador is a Parent of a Marian Student who is interested in supporting this cause and will serve as a volunteer to connect with families of prospective students and will be an advocate for the school in the community, in our parishes, and in our feeder schools.

Parent Ambassadors commit to a one-school year, renewable term, which includes participating in one introductory informational session, attending occasional meetings, and volunteering for several events or activities. We know that our families are very busy, so the level of participation is as much or as little as you can do. In addition to attending some events at school such as Open House, Orientation, etc., there are a variety of other ways Parent Ambassadors can help, including writing welcome cards to new Marian families, calling prospective families to answer questions, connecting with feeder schools and PTO’s, connecting with parishes, Directors of Religious Education, and CCD classes, participating in “Coffee Chats” with prospective families, assisting with New Student events, and more. Advancement News

Welcome to Marian Catholic High School and the start of the 2019-2020 school year. This is always an exciting time here at Marian. The cheerleaders, football team, volleyball team, cross country team, golf team, and band are busy practicing for the upcoming season; the halls are slowly being filled with the voices of students and staff preparing for the first day!

The Class of 1979 is gathering together to celebrate their 40th reunion on Friday, August 30, 2019 at the Colts Football Game. On Saturday, they will congregate at the school for tours of the newly renovated classrooms and restrooms, led by two members of the student body, before attending mass in our Chapel with Reverend Eugene P. Ritz, who is also a Marian graduate.  We are so excited to welcome back the Class of 1979!

On September 11th, all grandparents are invited to attend Mass at 9:30am in the gymnasium with the entire student body, staff, administration, and our Chaplain, Father Brian M. Miller.  Our students will have the privilege to sit with their grandparents and share refreshments at the conclusion of the celebration of the Eucharist. Please email if you can attend.

Homecoming is scheduled for Friday, September 27, 2019 at our beautiful campus. The Class of 1969 is returning for their 50th class reunion and will be honored at a wine and cheese social along with touring the school.  It is always a wonderful opportunity to meet and speak with those alumni who continue to provide the structural foundation that Marian is built upon.

Congratulations to both the Class of 1979 and the Class of 1969 for pursuing success in life after receiving an exceptional education rooted in faith, family, and tradition at Marian Catholic High School.
